Across multiple fall seasons and shifting narrators, a couple’s story unfolds—from a spark under an oak tree to intimacy, fracture, and the grief that follows—shadowed by a loyal dog, the man's own sketchbook and the woman's detailed memories. In this chapter, the male narrator sits on a park bench in autumn, sketching families, a playful dog, and the woman who reminds him of his lost love. As memories of their first meeting under the oak tree resurface, present scenes blur with longing recollections of what they once shared.
