In this chapter, the female narrator revisits their first anniversary, when a long-planned escape to a Vermont lodge offered a country of three, where tenderness and sexual passion mingled with unspoken secrets. Through present-day glimpses of him in her greenhouse and flashbacks of frost, fireplaces, and bare-skin trust, her memories blur into a meditation on love, vulnerability, and the cost of holding back the whole truth.
